Newcastle did make contact over signing £60m PL player, but his agents ignored them

Newcastle United never really stood a chance of signing Domink Szoboszlai this summer as the Hungarian’s agents had their eyes set on Liverpool from the off.

Many Newcastle fans were left with their head in their hands as once-touted ‘top target’ Domink Szoboszlai moved to Premier League rivals Liverpool. After so many stories had suggested that the deal for the 22-year-old was all-but done for him to join the Magpies, it’s little wonder fans were confused.

However now The Chronicle has strongly suggested that Newcastle never really stood a chance when it came to Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai was listening to “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on his flight to Liverpool

The article mentions the fact that Szoboszlai was listening to the Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on his headphones on the flight to England which says all we need to know, really.

However it then goes on to say: “Newcastle didn’t trigger the steep £60million fee but they were also not given any encouragement that Szoboszlai wanted to sign for the black and whites. His agents batted away questions on Newcastle throughout June with their minds focused on teaming Szoboszlai up with Jurgen Klopp and co.”

It sounds like any reports that suggested that Szoboszlai had agreed terms with Newcastle, or had had any contact with the club were likely very wide of the mark as his agents didn’t seem to want to entertain the idea of him moving to Newcastle as long as Liverpool was a possibility.

Newcastle only want players who are 100% committed to the project

With that in mind, we’ve dodged a bullet. He may go on to be a huge success at Liverpool, and more power to him if he does, but if his head and his heart were never tempted by Newcastle, then he’s not the player we want or need.

Eddie Howe only wants players who are 100% committed to the project, which again makes a mockery of the idea that Sandro Tonali doesn’t want to be here. If there was even a hint that that was the case, then he wouldn’t be here. It’s as simple as that.

Good luck to Szoboszlai at Liverpool, but we got a better deal in the end.
