Newcastle could return with a bid for £12m England defender

Transfer insider Dean Jones now thinks that Newcastle United could return with an offer for Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters as Tino Livramento deal stalls.

Newcastle recently looked like they were close to sewing up a move for Southampton‘s young right-back Tino Livramento but the links have all died down in the wake of Southampton revealing their wild asking price.

The Livramento links caught Dean Jones off guard as he thought Newcastle were advancing with a move for a different Southampton defender in Kyle Walker-Peters.

Walker-Peters is still an option for Newcastle this summer

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said: “Yeah, well the Livramento one caught me out because my understanding of it was that actually Walker-Peter’s conversation were further down the line than the Livramento one. So, there’s always the possibility that they come back to that, it’s not off the table by any stretch of the imagination. Like you say, in a way it might be more fitting to where they’re heading.”

Southampton signed Walker-Peters from Tottenham for £12million in 2020. He then broke into the England team in 2022 and has made two caps for the Three Lions, and will be looking for a return to the Premier League following Southampton’s relegation if he wants to play his way back into Gareth Southgate‘s plans.

The 23-year-old played 38 games for Southampton in all competitions last season operating on either side of the defence as needed.

Tino Livramento would be the better signing but KWP isn’t a bad back-up

Newcastle are looking for a left-back but seem to also have their eye on a right-back too, so someone like Walker-Peters who is comfortable on either side is ideal.

Nobody is going to oust Kieran Trippier from the right back role for a while but we definitely need suitable cover for Trippier and we currently only have Emil Krafth in that position who missed most of last season through injury. Javier Manquillo is likely to be leaving this summer and Harrison Ashby is being looked at as more of a future option.

Given the option I’d choose Tino Livramento over Kyle Walker-Peters as Livramento has a huge future in the game, but Walker-Peters wouldn’t be a bad Plan B if we could pick him up cheaply.
