Newcastle could move for England defender Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has apparently been told he can leave Manchester United which has put several clubs, including Newcastle United on high alert.

It looks like Maguire‘s Manchester United dream is coming to an end according to 90min. The former England captain became the most expensive defender in the world when he switched from Leicester City to Old Trafford for £80million in 2019, but recently his dream has turned more into a nightmare.

His form has faltered and the Manchester United faithful have turned on him. Despite that, England gaffer, Gareth Southgate stuck by him, taking him to the World Cup in Qatar where he put in some top performances, reminding fans what he’s capable of prompting Newcastle skipper Kieran Trippier to praise his England teammate, hailing him as a ‘fantastic leader‘.

Erik ten Hag remains unconvinced, however and has told Maguire that they will listen to offers in the summer.

Now Newcastle are said to be monitoring the situation but it’s believed that his colossal £200,000 per week wages will be a problem for any interested party. Both Manchester United and Maguire himself will have to cut their losses if a move is to materialise.

Newcastle keen on move for Maguire

Man United can’t expect to recoup anywhere near what they paid for 30-year-old, and likewise, Maguire isn’t really in a position to demand those types of wages.

Newcastle could offer Manchester United a loan deal with a partial wage payment in order to ease their outgoings and liberate Maguire from their roster, but it’s believed they’d prefer an outright sale which is where the wages become an issue.

I’m on the fence with this one. There’s definitely a top class defender there, but is he past his best? Or is it simply a case of him not fitting in to Man United’s system?

If there’s a way to make this deal work financially it could be a worth a punt. Newcastle need more back-up in the centre of defence and given Maguire’s wealth of experience he could be the perfect partner for Sven Botman. On the flip side, he is maybe a bit older than what Newcastle would prefer having already made it clear that their recruitment policy heavily favours youth.
