Newcastle could make late move for ‘outstanding’ player who’s already won two league titles

Newcastle United could be ready to pull off a shock move for a Premier League player who has fallen out of favour this season.

Newcastle are severely lacking in numbers in the midfield at the moment with Joelinton being the latest to add to the injury list, but there’s not a lot to spend on reinforcements.

But according to The Chronicle’s Aaron Stokes, Newcastle could prepare a loan move for Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with the midfielder looking for more regular first-team football.

Newcastle want ‘outstanding’ midfielder this month

After spending four years at Bayern Munich in which he played a bit-part role in winning two Bundesliga titles, Hojbjerg made the leap to the Premier League when he joined Southampton permanently in 2016.

After a few seasons impressing on the south coast, the ‘outstanding‘ Danish international was snapped up by Tottenham where he played a key role until very recently when new manager Ange Postecoglou came in.

Hojbjerg is still playing regularly for the North London club but it is often off the bench with just five starts in the Premier League so far this season.

As he enters the prime of his career Hojbjerg will no doubt want to be back into the starting 11 which is still an option at Spurs if he can impress, but he could make a move elsewhere this window with Newcastle keeping an eye on him.

Hojbjerg would fit Newcastle like a glove

If Newcastle can stump up the cash that Tottenham would likely demand to take Hojbjerg on temporarily, he could be the perfect match for what Newcastle are looking for at the moment.

With players set to come back from injury or suspension like Joe Willock and Sandro Tonali, Newcastle won’t want to commit to signing a new midfielder right now who could be left out in the cold when they return.

Hojbjerg could use this next six months to get back to his best and showcase to other teams and Tottenahm how good of a midfielder he can be in case a possible transfer develops in the summer.

For Newcastle, Hojbjerg would give them that bit of an edge, experience and grit that they have missed at times this season and that has cost them in big moments like in the Champions League against AC Milan.
