Newcastle could become contenders to sign £30m Arsenal player who Nick Pope knows well

Some Newcastle United fans have started to question Nick Pope.

The goalkeeper has been exceptional since his move from Burnley to Newcastle, despite making the odd error for Eddie Howe’s side.

Nick Pope‘s biggest misstep came last season when he was sent off at home to Liverpool, which led to him being suspended for the Carabao Cup final back in February.

However, he has also had a couple of issues this season. He was poor during the defeat to Brighton, while he recently received criticism following the Magpies’ 2-2 draw with Wolves.

While the majority of Newcastle fans will likely not believe the club need to look for a replacement, they could potentially have the option to very soon.

That is because Pope’s England colleague Aaron Ramsdale is enduring a tough time at Arsenal. He was outstanding last season after his £30million move from Sheffield United, but is now Mikel Arteta’s backup.

Ramsdale is playing second fiddle to David Raya, which is not good enough for him at the age of 25.

Newcastle could go for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale

According to TalkSPORT, Newcastle could potentially offer Ramsdale a route out of Arsenal.

The report states that Chelsea are interested, and are going to make a move for him at the end of the season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

But TalkSPORT believe that Newcastle could potentially do the same, even if it is unclear whether or not Ramsdale wants to leave the Gunners at this moment in time.

No surprise to see Ramsdale linked

Given his lack of minutes and Newcastle’s financial muscle, it is no surprise to see the Magpies linked with signing Ramsdale. However, this does sound rather farfetched at the moment. It feels like it is more speculation from TalkSPORT, rather than genuine knowledge of the situation behind the scenes at St James’ Park.

But he would be a good fit on Tyneside. Ramsdale has proven himself to be a top quality goalkeeper, while he is better with his feet than Pope.

On top of that, he has history with Eddie Howe. Back when he was Bournemouth manager, he brought Ramsdale to Dean Court and gave him his Premier League debut.

They have worked together in the past, so perhaps TalkSPORT’s claim that Howe could make a move to sign the goalkeeper for Newcastle is not as strange as it first seemed.
