Fabrizio Romano has taken to twitter to announce that a deal is close for Watford’s Brazilian striker Joao Pedro to move to the Premier League, but it’s not to Newcastle United.
Newcastle have been keeping tabs on Joao Pedro for a while having almost signed the 21-year-old ahead of the 2022/23 campaign only for the deal to collapse at the last minute.
Pedro seemed keen on a move to Newcastle and was looking forward to linking up with his fellow Brazilians Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes but it now seems that his future lies elsewhere.
Joao Pedro has an agreement in principle for a Premier League move this summer
Watford are mid-table in the Championship so Pedro’s only chance of playing Premier League football will be if he leaves the Hornets and that’s exactly what is set to happen according to Fabrizio Romano.
Romano tweeted on Thursday night: “EXCLUSIVE: Brighton are closing in on deal to sign Brazilian striker João Pedro from Watford.

“Understand there’s an agreement in principle, it’s set to be signed soon as club sources confirm. Personal terms agreed, long term deal in place. Here we go soon!”
Newcastle were quoted £30million for Joao Pedro but there’s no fee mentioned for Brighton
Interesting that there’s no fee mentioned by Romano. However when Newcastle were close to signing the forward the deal was set for £30million so it’ll be interesting to see how much Brighton are having to pay for his services after a year playing in the Championship.
He has managed 11 goals and four assists in his 25 Championship appearances which isn’t to be sniffed at, especially given Watford’s league position.
So while Newcastle look set to be missing out on Joao Pedro, with Champions League football all-but secured after the 4-1 win over Everton last night, the Magpies will likely be aiming higher this summer anyway.
