Whether he stays or goes, Newcastle United definitely need to sign someone who can play in Bruno Guimaraes’ position this summer.

Bruno Guimaraes is Newcastle United’s talisman, and there is no one at the club who can do what he does. He is the main man in midfield – the heartbeat who everything goes through.

The 26-year-old was the Magpies’ match-winner on Saturday, scoring the only goal against Fulham to really make fans believe that Newcastle can qualify for the Europa League.

Whether they qualify or not, Newcastle need to bring in another ‘number six’ this summer. Eddie Howe needs another option to use in that position, and signing one will be vital if Bruno is sold. He has a £100million release clause in his contract, and fans are fearful that he could depart.

But even if he stays, Newcastle need cover for Bruno. We need someone who can play as the six if Bruno is injured, or if Howe wants to play the Brazilian higher up the pitch – which is where he wants to be.

And that is why the latest report from iNews is very exciting.

Newcastle United scout 25-year-old Netherlands international

Newcastle are starting to make plans for the summer transfer window, with the club eyeing defensive reinforcements amid injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

But they are also looking at midfielders, and iNews have discovered a new player who is on the Magpies’ radar.

They report that Newcastle officials have been scouting PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman, adding that he is viewed as a creative number six.

That is exactly what Bruno is for Newcastle, but iNews add that they are unsure if the interest in Veerman is in anticipation of the Brazil international leaving St James’ Park.

Newcastle need a player like Joey Veerman no matter what

Obviously Newcastle need a contingency plan if Bruno does leave, but we should be signing someone who can play in his position no matter what.

We need cover in that position, as we are simply too reliant on Bruno. Eddie Howe is always worried about him getting injured, but never has the option of taking him out the team.

Signing a player like Veerman would give him that opportunity, and the PSV midfielder could be a good addition to the Magpies’ squad.

The 25-year-old has played eight times for the Netherlands, while he has got 14 assists in all competitions this season. Veerman also has six goals, taking his goal contributions tally to 20, which is very impressive.
