Newcastle United are now targeting a move for a Championship defender who is a big supporter of the Magpies.

Newcastle’s summer preparations are already well underway and one area that manager Eddie Howe is keen to improve on is at left-back where Dan Burn is currently occupying.

According to a new report from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Newcastle have been monitoring Ipswich defender Leif Davis who has enjoyed an impressive spell with the Championship team.

Newcastle want a new defender this summer

Whether it is on the left or in a more central role, Newcastle will definitely be in the market for a new defender this summer as they look to make big improvements to the squad for next season.

Last year, Newcastle boasted one of the best defence’s in the Premier League but this season it has been the polar opposite with the team seemingly conceding goals for fun.

In their latest run, the Geordies have conceded 12 goals in just their last four games with eight of those coming against Luton and Arsenal, and it just isn’t good enough for a team with huge ambitions.

The left-back position has been particularly troublesome for Newcastle fans who would like to see someone more agile and attack-minded than Burn, and Davis’ style of play would certainly suit that model.

They are not alone in their interest in him, however, as West Ham are looking to rival Newcastle for the defender.

Davis had a season ticket at Newcastle for years

As a boy, Davis’ football journey began at Wallsend Boys Club, the very same club that produced the likes of Alan Shearer, Steve Bruce, Michael Carrick and Peter Beardsley.

The 24-year-old defender was a huge Newcastle fan and had a season ticket at St James’ Park for years, though he never actually got to play for his boyhood club as he joined Morecambe’s academy in 2016.

From there he would go on to join Leeds, making 14 appearances for them in four years before finally settling in Ipswich where he helped them gain promotion from League One and is currently flying in the Championship.

Davis’ strengths lie mostly in his attacking ability and it may be a solid option for Newcastle to have if they are looking to move Burn back to a more central position for greater depth at the back.
