Newcastle today announced the double signing of youngsters Kyle Scott and Jake Turner, but the wait for further big name signings goes on, as fans’ concerns grow about strengthening the senior squad.
Scott, 21, is a central midfielder and has signed as a free agent, after his deal at Chelsea – where he spent 12 years – expired. He has represented England, Ireland and America at youth levels.
Turner is a 20-year-old goalkeeper, and has played for England at both under-18 and under-19 level. He spent some of last season on loan in the north east, with Darlington, before leaving Bolton at the expiration of his deal.
Both players could feature for Newcastle’s under-23 pre-season friendly at Rotherham today, and it is likely that both will spend most of the season in Neil Redfearn’s squad.
Future stars sign, but first team recruitment must be priority
The two could turn out to be stars of the future, but with just 10 days of the transfer window remaining, it is the stars of today that are uppermost if fans’ thoughts.
Several deals are reportedly being negotiated, including those for winger Allan Saint-Maximin and left-back Stanley N’soki.
But with Lee Charnley feeling the need to haggle over relatively miniscule amounts – in footballing terms – fans are rightly worried about getting their targets through the door.
Hopefully the announcement of the two prospects will kick-off a flurry of transfer activity this week, and fans will hope to see some of the club’s top targets photographed in the tunnel wearing the new kits imminently.
