The negotiations between Newcastle United and Leicester City continue to rumble on for Harvey Barnes but it’s still believed a deal will be reached this week.

Journalist Matt Law has spoken about the current state of play with Harvey Barnes as far as the negotiations between Leicester and Newcastle go.

It’s widely believed that things between Newcastle and Harvey Barnes will be fairly straight-forward if they’re not already sewn up, but the actual fee is yet to be agreed between the two clubs.

‘Harvey Barnes is getting there with Newcastle’ – Matt Law

Matt Law spoke on the Matt and Mike show clipped for Twitter by The Telegraph, where he mentioned in his most recent update that the clubs were still locked in negotiations, saying: “Harvey Barnes is getting there with Newcastle. I wrote last week that they were closing in. My last update on him last night was that the clubs are getting closer in terms of a fee.

“I don’t think there is a situation where bids have been made and rejected, they are just in constant negotiations. I think there is a hope that by the end of this week they will have agreed on a fee.”

Law then went on to say that he believes Barnes is keen on the move while giving a brilliant example of just how good a signing he will be for Newcastle.

“I think Harvey Barnes has decided he would like to join Newcastle,” said Law. “Harvey Barnes scored one less goal than Bukayo Saka last season and Leicester went down. I think over the course of the last five seasons in terms of assists and goals in the Premier League he’s actually above Saka.”

Barnes’ goal contributions over the last five seasons are better than Bukayo Saka’s

Most Newcastle fans are comparing Barnes to Allan Saint-Maximin to demonstrate how much of an upgrade he is, but if we’d been informed that his goal contributions bettered those of Bukayo Saka, would so many people be so luke-warm on the idea of Barnes?

Hopefully Newcastle and Leicester can start talking figures if they’re just locked in some “hi, how are ya?” email thread as suggested by Matt Law.

This deal looks 99% likely to happen, but the real interest comes in what happens after. Will Newcastle still be pursuing other targets or was Matt Law’s colleague, Luke Edwards right and this will be the end of the funds for now?
