South African football fans have taken to Twitter to react after Newcastle confirmed the signing of Bradley Cross on their official site.

The 19-year-old had spent two years on loan at Bundesliga side Schalke 04 from South African outfit Bidvest Wits.

However, after his contract ended in June, the Magpies have snapped him up on a two-year deal following a successful trial.

Newcastle’s announcement of the deal revealed that there was strong interest in Cross from other Premier League sides, which bodes well for the type of prospect he is.

The teenager has enjoyed an unusual career so far having gone straight to the Bundesliga from South Africa, but that can only have been beneficial to his development as a footballer in terms of adapting to new environments.

Additionally, the defender has some international experience under his belt too, having represented the South Africa Under-20 side.

The centre-back will initially join Chris Hogg’s development side as he gets to grips with English football, alongside another promising recruit in Rodrigo Vilca, who joined from Deportivo Municipal earlier this month.
