Marc Guehi handed transfer advice amid speculation of fresh Newcastle pursuit in January

In a perfect world, Newcastle United sign Marc Guehi in January after failing to land him in the summer.

The Magpies committed so much time towards trying to sign Marc Guehi, with Paul Mitchell trying desperately to strike a deal with Crystal Palace.

Ultimately, Mitchell was unable to sign Guehi. Newcastle ended the summer without a new right-sided centre-back, and that continues to plague Eddie Howe’s side.

It was evident over the weekend why Newcastle still need Guehi. While he was impressing in a Crystal Palace shirt, the Magpies’ lack of pace at centre-back was being exposed once again.

With the January transfer window looming, Newcastle will soon have another chance to bring Guehi to St James’ Park. However, it does not look like that will happen.

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United have discussed making a fresh move to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace in January.

However, they add that a deal for the England international is unlikely.

The Telegraph state that Guehi has been advised to keep his options open until the summer. By then he will be in the final year of his Crystal Palace contract.

That stance is understandable, as there will be more interest in the centre-back at the end of the season. Teams often opt against doing business in January, which would mean Guehi has fewer suitors.

By waiting until the summer, Guehi would have a better chance of joining a club that is competing in the Champions League.

Guehi stance could ruin Newcastle’s transfer hopes

That would be bad news for Newcastle United. At this moment in time, it looks almost impossible for the Magpies to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The quality just is not there.

And if more clubs are challenging for Guehi’s signature, what else will Newcastle have to make them stand out from the competition?

It feels like Newcastle’s chance to sign Guehi has been and gone. The summer was the optimum moment, but Palace opted against cashing in. They wanted £75million for Guehi, which was far too much for Newcastle to pay.

A deal would be cheaper in January, but Guehi is probably right to hang fire and reassess his options in the summer.

That might force Newcastle to identify other centre-backs targets, as it is still clear they need to acquire Fabian Schar’s long-term replacement.

Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle have scouted Abdukodir Khusanov, who would be a cheaper alternative to Guehi.
