Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko is reportedly a surprise target for Newcastle United in January.

According to the Northern Echo, Eddie Howe wants to add players with Premier League experience to his squad when the transfer window opens in the new year.

And the report adds that the Magpies could make a move for Zinchenko if his City woes continue.

The Ukrainian has barely featured this season, making just five appearances in all competitions so far. His last Premier League appearance came in the 5-0 thrashing of Arsenal back in August.

So could the 24-year-old move to St James’ Park in search of minutes?

Zinchenko would certainly be an excellent signing for the Magpies. He’s been turned into a left-back by Pep Guardiola, despite arriving as a midfielder for £1.8million in 2016.

Left-back is a position where Newcastle can certainly improve.

Matt Ritchie is the ageing first choice, despite actually being out of position. Jamal Lewis can barely get a game, while Paul Dummett is once again hindered by injury.

Zinchenko would be an upgrade on what we already have. But would he want to come to Newcastle? That may depend on where the Magpies are in the table when the January transfer window swings open.

He may be open to a move away from the Etihad if his lack of minutes continue, but Newcastle need to improve soon if they’re going to convince him that a move to the North East is the best for his career.

Pep Guardiola isn’t using Zinchenko at the moment, but some Man City fans don’ want him to be sold.
