Newcastle United are now looking towards Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes as an attacking option ahead of the summer transfer window.

While a lot of the Newcastle transfer talk has involved Leicester‘s James Maddison, it now looks like the Magpies are turning their attention to his teammate, Harvey Barnes.

According to 90min Barnes is ready to move this summer after being one of the few bright spots in an awful season for the former Premier League champions.

Harvey Barnes is hoping to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans

Barnes has bagged 10 goals this term from midfield but his efforts have done little to help Leicester’s top-flight survival bid with the Foxes currently in the danger zone.

The 25-year-old holds the belief that he is good enough to force his way into England‘s Euro 2024 squad but it’s probably going to be better for his chances if he moves from Leicester in the summer, even if they stave off relegation.

90min believes that Newcastle could be the club to offer the ‘lightning fast‘ winger an escape, and now with Newcastle doing so well in the Premier League, Gareth Southgate is more likely to be casting his eye over Eddie Howe‘s squad more regularly which would be ideal for Barnes.

Tottenham are also said to be looking at Barnes and Maddison, so it’s going to be an interesting battle between the two Champions League hopefuls this summer. It seems very likely that the final league positions of Tottenham and Newcastle will play a big part in their summer dealings.

If it comes down a choice between Barnes and Maddison there’s only one winner

If given the option of Barnes or Maddison I’d still go with Maddison. I think he’s a better player all-round and fits Newcastle like a glove, but Barnes wouldn’t be a bad second option. My one concern with Barnes is his lack of assists this season.

He’s bagged 10 goals but only provided one assist which isn’t great for a winger. On the flip side, those figures al;most match Miguel Almiron‘s (Miggy has one more goal) and we are absolutely buzzing with the season he’s having, so it’s certainly not a terrible return.

If Leicester are relegated then I expect clubs to be circling them like vultures with Barnes, Maddison and Youri Tielemans all on the menu. Hopefully Newcastle will be right amongst the melee and come out with at least one of that trio.
