Amidst a summer of chaos, Loris Benito was reportedly set to become Newcastle United’s first signing of the summer.
Rafa Benitez’s contract was still up in the air. The only hope was the proposed takeover from the Bin Zayed Group. The Sun were the ones who broke the ‘news’ about the mega-money takeover, stating that Mike Ashley had agreed to sell the club for £350 million.
And on May 27th, the Sun also reported that Swiss defender Benito could become the first signing of the BZG era. They reported that Benitez wanted to bring in the Young Boys ace to boost his defensive ranks.
They also stated that he had flown in to London and “could be on his way to complete final talks with the Toon”, posting a picture Benito had uploaded to his Instagram account of an airport with a Union Jack emoji.
One month later, Benitez officially left Newcastle United. As we all know, the Bin Zayed Group takeover didn’t happen. But what happened to the man that was apparently set to become the first signing of the new ownership?
Well, Benito is now playing in Ligue 1 after signing a three-year deal with Bordeaux. And it’s fair to say things are going well for him.
Bordeaux are fourth in the league, six points behind leaders PSG. He’s even had the chance to rub shoulders with Neymar, losing 1-0 after a goal from the most expensive player in the world.
Would Benito have signed for Newcastle if Benitez had stayed in charge? Who knows.
But according to the Chronicle, that picture of him heading to England had nothing to do with the Magpies. Instead, he was heading to Oxfordshire for a holiday as his partner is English.
So that’s two stories the Sun got very wrong. What a shock…
