Newcastle and Aston Villa are both desperate to sign a striker, but it looks like the west midlands side are the first to get a deal done.

According to Belgian outlet HLN, Mbwana Samatta is set to join Villa from Genk for £8.5 million. Sky Sports (16th January, 17:03) have also backed this up, reporting that a deal is close.

It seems like the Magpies and Villa have been tracking the same strikers all month, and this is no different. Back in November, BBC Sport reported that Samatta was a target for Newcastle. However, there’s been no more talk of him heading to St James’ Park since.

While Newcastle may have decided he wasn’t the one they wanted, he could now have a chance to prove us wrong.

Aston Villa probably need a striker more than we do, considering main man Wesley is out for the season. Interestingly, he’s another striker to arrive from Belgium who Villa pipped us to.

But is Samatta one that got away? Considering how cheap he is, possibly. Talk of a striker heading to the north east has gone quiet, while Villa seem to have got their man.

Will he be a success in England? Who knows, but he’s probably a better bet than Islam Slimani, the Newcastle flop who was linked with a move Villa Park earlier.

For less than £10 million, this could go down as a mistake by the Newcastle hierarchy, especially if we’re unable to sign a forward this month.

Joelinton has ended his goal drought, but the jury is still out. Newcastle need extra fire power and ending January with no new signings would be a massive risk.
