Newcastle United reportedly sent scouts to watch Kris Ajer in action for Celtic this weekend.
The Norway international started against bitter rivals Rangers, but it was another afternoon for him the Hoops to forget.
Steven Gerrard’s Premiership champions blew the visitors away with a brilliant performance and 4-1 result, with strikers Kemar Roofe (2), Alfredos Morelos and Jermain Defoe all in target.
Celtic were not helped by the red card received by Callum McGregor midway through the first-half, and were always going to struggle to get something from that point on.
According to The Sun, Newcastle representatives were present to cast eyes over Ajer, who captained Celtic at Ibrox.
The £12 million-rated star really struggled, as did most of his teammates, and drew criticism from Kris Boyd, who questioned his defending on the second Rangers goal on Sky Sports.
He said (via Shields Gazette): “What a fantastic strike. (But) When you look at it again when he cuts inside – Kristoffer Ajer, why is he ducking out the road?”
Ajer has been tipped to leave Parkhead this summer, at which point he’ll only have one year remaining on his contract.
It’s been reported previously that Newcastle were considering tabling an £8 million offer (Daily Mail).
Ajer may still need to convince
It was a bad day at the office for Ajer, who hasn’t had the best of seasons for Celtic.
He has high potential, but this isn’t the first time Ajer’s defending has been criticised.
Newcastle probably need more convincing if they are going to swoop, although Ajer going into the final year of his contract does make a potential deal more appealing and more low risk.
