Newcastle United will apparently make a play for Feyenoord star Luis Sinisterra in January.

That’s according to Dutch journalist Maarten Wijffels, who was speaking on Voetbalpodcast.

Sinisterra, a Colombia international, has been with his current club since the summer of 2019 when he moved from Once Caldas.

It has been a very bright start to 2021/22 for Sinisterra.

The 22-year-old has already bagged nine goals so far, and also made six assists.

He’s certainly been standing out, and has an 8.18 average rating on WhoScored so far – only Dusan Tadic of Ajax has higher (8.24).

It seems Newcastle like what they see, and Wijffels said: “This will be the €20m million/£17 million sale that will go through.

“He has a lot, that goal against Union Berlin that Jahanbakhsh made. Like he sometimes takes the ball, always facing forward. A really wonderful player. Newcastle United will immediately start bidding.”

It is an interesting claim from Wijffels.

Undoubtedly, central defenders and perhaps a new striker should be the priority for Newcastle in January.

The current system is not suited to wingers, which is what Sinisterra is.

Of course, whoever comes in could easily ditch the wing-backs system Steve Bruce was so fond of in favour of a back-four and natural wingers.

Newcastle should be steering away from risks

Newcastle’s position in the Premier League is precarious.

It has been a very bad start and the club are yet to win a game. A relegation battle could easily be on the cards.

Newcastle surely ought to be getting players in who are a bit more proven.

Sinisterra is undoubtedly a fine young talent, and he will probably have a number of clubs on his tail soon.

But maybe Newcastle should be looking at him next year, once Premier League safety has (hopefully) been assured.
