Newcastle United are interested in signing Romeo Lavia from Southampton, but will face competition from Liverpool if they do decide to make a move.

It was reported earlier in June that the 19-year-old was on Eddie Howe’s radar, with the Magpies considering moves for relegated players in a bid to get the most out of their transfer budget.

Newcastle have taken a fancy to plenty of Southampton players, one of which is Lavia. It is easy to see why. For all of the Saints’ struggles, the Belgian enjoyed a really strong debut year at St Mary’s.

That is why Newcastle are keen, just like the rest of the Premier League’s elite. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal and Liverpool are interested, while Manchester United and Chelsea are also keeping an eye on the situation.

That is a lot of competition if Newcastle do decide to make a move, and former Toon defender Jose Enrique has admitted that he would like to see the teenager at the home of one of his other ex employers.

Jose Enrique wants Romeo Lavia at Liverpool

With Liverpool interested in bringing Lavia to Anfield, Enrique has admitted that he would love to see the ‘top player’ make the move to Merseyside.

He wrote on Twitter: “He is the player we need to sign. He is a top player with a lot of potential to become world class under Klopp.”

The Spaniard is spot on in his assessment. Lavia has already proven himself to be an excellent player, and he has the potential to play at the highest level. Understandably, that is why he wants him to join Liverpool.

He would be an excellent signing for Jurgen Klopp, and the same goes for Eddie Howe. However, it feels like a move to Tyneside is off the cards with Sandro Tonali set to join. The 23-year-old is going to be a marquee arrival, and Newcastle will then turn their attention towards an attacking midfielder.

That should end Newcastle’s interest in Lavia, who appears to be set for an immediate return to the Premier League.
