Former magpie Jose Enrique has said that Newcastle United would be an ideal destination for Joe Gomez should he find himself leaving Liverpool this summer.
In the summer Newcastle were credited with an interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as the Sven Botman saga dragged on. However, Newcastle eventually got their man and the Gomez interest died out.
Now it seems that Gomez could be back on the menu for Newcastle at least according to Jose Enrique. Enrique believes it might be time for Gomez to move on saying on his LFC News YouTube channel: “I played with (Joe) Gomez and I love Gomez. But it’s time for him to go. I would keep (Nat) Phillips ahead of Gomez.
Jose Enrique thinks Joe Gomez would be good for Newcastle
“If you want to play high up the pitch, then he (Phillips) isn’t quick enough, but Gomez is fast – if they come with the right amount of money for Gomez, then maybe it’s the time for him to move on. It will be good for Gomez as well.
He then went on to namecheck Newcastle as a destination: “They have Botman and Schar. Yes (he could start for Newcastle), but if he’s at the top of his game, then he could fight for a place in our team.

“If they come for the right money for Gomez, then yes. If the money isn’t good enough, then I will keep Gomez over Phillips.
“£25 million. He is worth it, for that money. He is 25. He has won everything as well. An amazing age, so maybe it’s time to move on.”
It sounds like Enrique can’t decide whether Gomez good enough for Liverpool or not, but it seems he clearly feels that he could get in our team.
Gomez would be a good alternative to Schar
I do agree with Enrique that it would be a good move for Newcastle though. If we could pick up a young, pacey England international defender for £25million from a Premier League rival, I think we’d be laughing.
As big a fan as I am of Fabian Schar, I’d say Gomez would get in the team ahead of him given his age and pace. Like Schar he likes to stride forward to help the team attack, but has a lot more pace to get back into position if the opposition were to break.
We need two players for every position regardless, so there’d be scope to rotate between Schar and Gomez to fit the opposition. I definitely back this move if we could pick him up for £25million.
