Newcastle United have endured a tough start to the summer transfer window, with their Premier League rivals reportedly poaching their top targets.
After the promise of a busy summer, it is fair to say that many are growing frustrated with the lack of movement in the transfer market.
Newcastle United are keen to improve several positions in their starting XI after not signing a single player to improve it since the 2023 summer window. One position Eddie Howe is eager to improve is centre-back.
The Magpies worked tirelessly to try and bring Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi to Tyneside in 2024 but failed after multiple bids were rejected. On Thursday, the Telegraph reported that Liverpool are set to make a bid for Guehi in which is a big blow for Newcastle and their transfer plans.
Additionally, it was confirmed that Jarell Quansah has agreed to join Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old was also on Newcastle’s list of transfer targets.
With Howe and his recruitment team returning to the drawing board, fans are beginning to question what is happening internally.

While the start of the transfer window has not been positive, there is still over two months to go before it shuts. Newcastle have plenty of time to add new faces before the start of the season, but the plan was to get business done early in preparation for pre-season.
It was reported that Howe wants two new players at Newcastle before July 7, the date that non-international players return to Darsley Park for the start of pre-season training.
After the worrying updates, Newcastle fans took to social media platform X to voice their concerns about their lack of progress in the transfer market.
“Totally difficult to watch, we’ve probably spent 15 months manoeuvring for Guehi, with all the delays we’ve now likely lost our back up option.” said one fan, while another added: “Howe said it best, good players don’t tend to hang around. The club needed to move quickly and get signings done. So far, the owners have massively let him down.”
This fan highlighted Newcastle’s links to Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, saying: “Be a mistake to just stand back and watch these two deals happen. Although we’re not competing with Liverpool if it’s been us and them unfortunately. Van Hecke wouldn’t be a bad option, though, if the reported interest is indeed correct.”
“Quansah was too. Literally three of our targets and they’re all moving for less than we offered.” said another devastated Newcastle fan.
Another fan added: “We aren’t doing anything, it’s a joke.”
Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “I don’t think there is a plan tbh. Caught up in whatever inner turmoil is going on.”

It has also been reported that Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande is in talks over a move to Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old was believed to be in Newcastle’s thinking in the past, but Howe’s recruitment team opted against pursuing him this summer.
Fans must remember that the transfer window is only in its fifth day and does not close until September. Even if new players are not arriving now, there is still a lot of time for Howe to get the players he is so keen on signing.

Additionally, reports have shared that Newcastle are pleased with how their targets abroad are being kept a secret, so there is work bubbling away behind the scenes to get alternative players in should they miss out on the likes of Guehi.
Despite that, Newcastle’s recruitment team will feel the pressure of the fans who are desperate to see new faces. Bruno Guimaraes called for signings at Newcastle just minutes after they qualified for the Champions League, so it is not only the fans they have to please.
