Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Magpies tried to sign Ciro Immobile during the transfer window.
The Italy international was the subject of contact from Newcastle at the start of the summer, and Steve Bruce’s side offered the Italy international a five-year contract worth £5 million per season – a £25 million salary in total.
However, the ex-Borussia Dortmund striker and Lazio decided to turn our offer down, and instead renew the 30-year-old’s deal with the Serie A outfit. Romano also mentions that Immobile said the Magpies contacted his agent.
Some fans below have expressed pain at hearing this news, and we don’t blame them.
It would’ve been an exquisite signing had Lee Charnley and Bruce been able to pull it off, but perhaps it was slightly too ambitious in the end.
After all, the Torre Annunziata-born frontman scored 39 goals last season, including 36 in 39 Serie A games – he comfortably outscored Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of 31 strikes in 33 league appearances.
Let’s see what the Newcastle fans have been saying about Romano’s report…

Fabrizio why are you doing this to the Toon, we were happy with Callum Wilson and you’re waving a world class goalscorer in the faces of United supporters everywhere. Have we not been through enough?
