How Saudi club is now feeling about signing Miguel Almiron from Newcastle United

Newcastle United are looking to sell Miguel Almiron this summer, and one possible suitor has already made their mind up about a deal.

With the Magpies looking to sign a new winger ahead of the 2024/25 season, the club have decided that they are willing to listen to offers for Miguel Almiron. It feels like his time on Tyneside is coming towards its conclusion, five and a half years after he arrived at St James’ Park.

A move to Saudi Arabia appeared to be on the cards at the start of the year, only for Almiron to turn down the chance to play in the Middle East. He decided to stay at Newcastle United, but could now have another opportunity to join a Saudi Pro League club.

It has been reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie that Newcastle are in talks with a team in Saudi Arabia about a deal for Almiron, with the Magpies looking to receive £20million for the 30-year-old.

That is similar to what Newcastle paid for Almiron in January 2019, and is actually deemed too much by one Saudi Arabian club.

Steven Gerrard’s club not trying to sign Miguel Almiron from Newcastle United

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who has taken to X to provide details of Al-Ettifaq’s stance over a deal for Miguel Almiron.

Al-Ettifaq are managed by Steven Gerrard, and it was claimed on social media on Tuesday night that they were close to agreeing a deal to sign Almiron from Newcastle. However, Jacobs has explained that this is not the case.

He wrote: “Al-Ettifaq are not currently in talks to sign Miguel Almiron. Total cost of a deal is viewed as too expensive and no approach has been made to date. Ettifaq will only add a winger or forward if Demarai Gray departs and their top target is Al-Fayha’s Fashion Sakala.”

There will be other options for Almiron

Al-Ettifaq, who are not one of the clubs funded by PIF, appear to have no plans to sign Almiron. They believe he will cost too much money, and have another winger on their radar if they end up needing to sign one.

That means they are not going to help Newcastle out, but there are likely plenty of other clubs that will.

Al-Shabab were the side that nearly bought Almiron in January. They had a deal in place for the Paraguay international, and will reportedly go back in for him this summer if they receive an indication that he is now willing to make the move.

When it comes to a transfer to Saudi Arabia, that is the main factor. Almiron needs to say yes, which he was not prepared to do at the start of the year. There will need to be a change of heart from the Toon winger, whose Copa America adventure came to an end on Tuesday night as Paraguay lost to Costa Rica.

If Almiron still decides he does not want to sign for a club in Saudi Arabia then Newcastle will need to look elsewhere for a buyer. There is plenty of time to do that, but it could make it a lot harder for the Magpies to get the fee they are looking for.

However, even in Saudi Arabia, the £20million asking price has been deemed too much by one club in Al-Ettifaq.
