How much Newcastle will have to pay to sign Kalvin Phillips permanently from Man City

If Newcastle United think they can sign Kalvin Phillips for a bargain fee from Manchester City then they can think again.

The Magpies have been in talks with Pep Guardiola’s side about bringing the 28-year-old to St James’ Park during the January transfer window. It has been claimed that Man City will not stop Kalvin Phillips from joining Newcastle, and that the Magpies are actually confident of completing a loan deal.

Eddie Howe is going to have to utilise the loan market to strengthen his squad during January due to financial fair play concerns, but even temporary deals won’t be cheap. For instance, it has been claimed that the loan fee to bring Phillips to St James’ Park could be as much as £7.5million.

That is a lot of money just for a six month loan, but any kind of temporary deal will lead to questions over a permanent move.

Manchester City ideally want to sell Phillips, and a new report from iNews has hinted at how much a permanent transfer in the summer would cost Newcastle.

Newcastle may have to pay £40m to sign Kalvin Phillips in the summer

According to iNews, Manchester City would like any loan deal to include an obligation to make the move permanent in the summer for a fee in the region of £40million.

That is just shy of what they paid for him in 2022, with Phillips arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Leeds United for £42million.

If Newcastle were to sign him for that amount, he would become one of the club’s most expensive signings ever. He would be joint-fifth with Joelinton, who cost £40million in 2019.

In this current climate, it is an understandable fee for an England international playing for one of the biggest clubs in the country. It is also a fee that Newcastle would likely be able to afford in the summer.

But being able to afford it and wanting to spend that much are two completely different things. It all comes down to how highly the club rate Phillips, and whether or not they believe he could still play a part when Sandro Tonali returns.

This is the difficult situation that Newcastle find themselves in. They need short-term solutions, but that could massively hinder their long-term spending.
