Newcastle United are pushing to provide some positive news in the transfer market amid a couple of major setbacks.

It started when Newcastle missed out on Hugo Ekitike. He is heading to Liverpool, with the Reds paying £79million for the Frenchman. That was a blow for the Magpies, but it should also help keep Alexander Isak at St James’ Park.

Then came news that James Trafford could join Manchester City. That would be highly embarrassing for Newcastle United, who have chased the young goalkeeper for more than 12 months.

Newcastle want Wissa to come in and add more depth to Eddie Howe’s attack, and a new update from BBC Sport states that the 28-year-old is unsettled after speculation regarding his future.

According to BBC Sport, Wissa has left Brentford’s pre-season training camp in Portugal to return to London.

They report that the forward will hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles about his future at the Gtech Community Stadium.

He has three clubs chasing him, one of which is Newcastle United. Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur are the other sides that have been named as suitors.

BBC Sport claim that Newcastle and Spurs have intensified their efforts to strike a deal over the past couple of days, as the Toon recruitment team attempt to bring Wissa to Tyneside.

How much Yoane Wissa could cost Newcastle United

Newcastle United are in a position to offer Wissa an exciting package. They can give him the opportunity to play in the Champions League, which is something he has never done in his career.

It could largely come down to how much Brentford want for him, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey telling Geordie Boot Boys that a deal could be possible for less than £40million.

“Newcastle are still pushing to sign Wissa,” he said.

“There is a limit to what Newcastle will pay given his age. There was talk of a £50million price tag, but I am told a deal could be done for less than £40million.”

That is encouraging, but for Newcastle it will likely depend on how much less than £40million.

Location will also come into consideration, as a move to Tottenham Hotspur would allow Wissa to remain in London. In contrast, signing for Newcastle United would mean relocating to the North East.
