Hansi Flick called Florian Wirtz the ‘total package’ amid Newcastle link

If Newcastle can sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, they’ll be getting the total package.

That’s according to Germany manager Hansi Flick, who handed Wirtz his international debut earlier in the year against Liechtenstein.

At 18-years-old, the attacking midfielder has already played four times for his country.

And shortly after his Germany debut, Flick had this to say about the teenager.

“Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefreeness,” Flick said at a press conference in September.

“He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Flick’s Florian Wirtz comments should excite Newcastle fans

The fact he’s already played four times for his country is a testament to his talent. He’ll likely be a mainstay in the German team for the next 10-15 years.

Wirtz is excelling at club level too. He’s made eight appearances in the Bundesliga this season, scoring four goals and providing six assists. On top of that, he’s scored twice in the Europa League, including a goal in a recent 4-0 rout of Celtic.

His record this season is 12 goal contributions in just 11 games. That is astonishing for a man so young.

And according to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), the Magpies sent a scout to watch him on Sunday and want to bring him to St James’ Park.

However, they may have to wait until 2023. Even then, they’ll likely face competition from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Bringing Wirtz to Newcastle could be extremely difficult, even with our newfound wealth. It will largely be dependent on us climbing the table in the next couple of years.

I highly doubt he’ll fancy a Premier League relegation battle when he could be fighting to win the Champions League…

But Wirtz is the kind of player who could be the poster boy for this new era at St James’ Park. The team could be built around him – he could be part of the new Newcastle’s spine.

A player who can score and create goals at such a young age is worth his weight in gold. And the terrifying thing is he can still get so much better.

That’s why Hansi Flick believes he’s the total package, and that’s why he could be a transformative signing for Newcastle in a couple of years.
