Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Salomon Rondon told The Guardian that he would jump at the chance to sign for the Magpies in January if the opportunity arose.
The 81-cap Venezuela striker said: ‘I loved the pressure, proved I could wear that No 9 shirt and I thought I could stay.
‘If in January, I had a chance to sign again for Newcastle I would do it for sure because they gave me a lot and I felt so much when I was at St James’.’
By the look of the replies on Twitter, a number of Newcastle fans would welcome such a move.
Rondon shone during his one and only season with us in 2018/19, leaving with an impressive 18 Premier League goal involvements under his belt as he and Ayoze Perez caused chaos under Rafa Benitez.
The ex-Zenit St Petersburg frontman eventually reunited with Benitez in China, signing a contract with Dalian Yifang after they triggered his £16.5 million release clause according to Yahoo Sport.
Before his move was confirmed, The Telegraph reported that Rondon would earn £8 million-a-year under Benitez, equating to a £154k-a-week salary.
In that respect, a return to Tyneside would be a big financial commitment from Mike Ashley, something that is presumably unlikely to happen for the services of a 31-year-old.
Having said that, it would certainly be a romantic return for the powerful striker, who won the hearts of the St James’ Park faithful with his full-blooded and committed displays.
