Gabriel Agbonlahor says Newcastle will seriously annoy people if they sign 26-year-old in January

Following Tuesday’s Premier League vote, there is nothing stopping Newcastle United signing Ruben Neves on loan from Al Hilal.

It did look like a vote would be passed by Premier League members to temporarily ban clubs from loaning players from clubs with the same owner, only for the decision to go the other way.

It emerged on Tuesday afternoon that not enough clubs had voted in favour of the ban, meaning it will not be enforced.

Therefore, as every media outlet keeps telling you, Newcastle can now sign whoever they want on loan from clubs in Saudi that are also owned by PIF. But the rule extends to the rest of the Premier League, meaning the other 19 clubs can do deals with clubs their owners are associated with too – like they have been doing for years.

But it is Newcastle causing the most outrage, despite the fact they are yet to actually do anything infuriating.

However, they do at least have the chance to do something that will rile their Premier League rivals, and TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor thinks opposition fans will be really annoyed if Ruben Neves does head to Tyneside on loan.

Agbonlahor says Newcastle will annoy people if they sign Ruben Neves

Agbonlahor has spoke about the prospect of Neves joining Newcastle on loan in January on TalkSPORT on Wednesday morning.

“I think if it did happen and Neves did come I think fans would be frustrated because it’s a bit like ‘okay, you need a bit of help, go and get a loan’,” he said.

“Does a job for Newcastle, they get into the top four now, and then you go back.

“It’ll keep happening even more now, so I don’t see that happening.”

Newcastle probably won’t sign Neves on loan anyway

Agbonlahor is right. There will be outrage if Newcastle sign Neves on loan in January, even though there is now nothing stopping them from doing just that.

For some Toon fans, that is exactly the reason why they want to see the 26-year-old arrive at St James’ Park in January. They want to stick it to everybody else.

However, the annoying thing about all of this Neves outrage is that deal might not and probably will not even happen.

He is just one midfielder who the club have looked at, and the fact he plays for a PIF-owned club is the reason it has snowballed into this huge controversy.

And even though Newcastle can legally sign Neves on loan, there is another issue. It was reported on Tuesday that he is expected to stay with Al Hilal, who plan to keep him until at least the end of the season.

For all this talk of Newcastle can do what they want and sign whoever from Saudi, everyone is forgetting that there will be another club involved who will have their own priorities and their own agendas.

Fans will be annoyed if Newcastle sign Neves, but they probably won’t even get the chance to be annoyed.
