Freddie Woodman has signed a one-year extension to his Newcastle contract, before securing a season-long loan at Championship side Swansea, according to the Chronicle.
It is a deal that should ease fans’ worries over the future of our number one keeper, Martin Dubravka, with his departure unlikely to have been sanctioned if the Slovak was on the verge of leaving.
It is a great move for Woodman, with a side that will be hoping to be in the play-off mix when May comes around, and should he get plenty of game time, he will be very much in the Championship spotlight.
It is also a fantastic deal for the Welsh side, with them getting one of the top goalkeeping prospects in the country, and giving him the chance to showcase his skills at the Liberty Stadium.
Great deal for everyone except Newcastle
It is not such a great deal for Newcastle, however, with the England under-21 stopper only signing a single year extension to his deal, which now runs until summer 2021.
Should he have a great season in Wales, clubs will be circling around him, and with only a year left on his contract when he returns to Newcastle, we will be back in the same position as this summer.
A four or five year deal would have been the ideal scenario, and whether the one-year extension was down to the club or player, is not known.
But at least fans can be sure that Dubravka will be at St James’ Park next season, and with that situation seemingly resolved, all focus can switch to bringing in the much needed numbers to bolster the squad.
