Newcastle United are about to sign Southampton defender Tino Livramento but his arrival will not spell the end of the Magpies transfer business.

Eddie Howe said to the media on Friday that he wants another two additions through the door at Newcastle before the window closes next month. It wasn’t clear whether one of those two would be Tino Livramento, but many journalists have taken Howe’s words to mean two more once that deal is completed.

A centre-back is high on the priorities list, preferably a right-sided defender to cover for Fabian Schar. One name that keep popping up linked to Newcastle is Crystal Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen.

Crystal Palace want £40million for Andersen

It’s thought that a deal for Andersen could set Newcastle back another £40million but that price hasn’t seemed to put the Magpies off.

Now Fabrizio Romano has said on his Here We Go Podcast that Newcastle have had their eye on Andersen for a while, saying: “Let’s see what happens with the centre-backs I think as an extra deal. They always had conversations with [Axel] Disasi but then he joined Chelsea, also they spoke multiple times with the agents of Joachim Andersen who is a player they have appreciated for a long time.”

The Disasi approach Romano mentioned was reported by Keith Downie has being false and agent-driven, which of course casts a shadow over what Romano is saying about Andersen given that Disasi did indeed end up elsewhere without any real fuss from Newcastle.

Newcastle need a no-nonsense centre-back and Andersen is perfect

Andersen would be a good signing for Eddie Howe though, an ‘outstanding‘ player with plenty of Premier League experience, the 27-year-old Danish international played 32 Premier League games last season contributing with one goal.

It’s not a name that’s going to get Newcastle fans leaping out of their seat but neither was Dan Burn and now he’s a Newcastle hero.

He’s another hard-grafting defender, no frills and no nonsense. He’s what we need right now to make sure than any injuries to the back four can be covered ably.
