Fabrizio Romano names Newcastle’s two ‘priorities’ this summer

It is going to be a very busy summer for Newcastle United, and it could be one of huge change with a European adventure on the horizon.

Newcastle look well placed to qualify for Europe next season. The only mystery is which competition it will be in.

Champions League is, of course, the dream, and we can force our way back into the top four this weekend with a win over Manchester United. However, Europa League or even Conference League would suffice – just being back in Europe is enough.

Eddie Howe will need a much deeper squad to deal with the additional fixtures, and he will also need to boost the quality throughout if we are going to compete in the Champions League.

There will be plenty of new arrivals during the summer transfer window, and Fabrizio Romano has named the Magpies’ two priority positions.

Newcastle’s priorities are midfield and out wide

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside which two positions Newcastle will be prioritising this summer.

“Midfielder and winger remain two priorities for Newcastle, I think they will be busy but also smart on the market as always,” he said.

Romano also commented on the Magpies’ interest in Scott McTominay, which is well documented.

He added: “Scott McTominay remains a player they really like, including Eddie Howe; but Man United rejected the approaches in January and let’s see what they will decide in the summer.”

It is no surprise that midfield is a priority. We needed one in January, but failed to get one.

Howe continues to search for the new number six of his dreams, as his scouting team scan the globe for the one player who can free up Bruno Guimaraes to play higher up the pitch.

McTominay is the most heavily linked at the moment, but there are plenty of other centre-midfielders on Newcastle’s radar.

It is interesting to see Romano claim that a winger is a priority, so soon after Anthony Gordon’s arrival. He cost £45million from Everton, and the club have very high hopes for the 22-year-old.

However, it looks like another new attacker could be arriving. That would perhaps make sense, especially if we qualify for the Champions League. Allan Saint-Maximin is inconsistent, while Miguel Almiron is unlikely to perform at the same levels he has this season.

The dream winger signing would be Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli, but he might be beyond us this summer.
