Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is a player that’s consistently being linked with a move to Newcastle United and now transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano has backed up those links in his latest update.
In his latest YouTube update, Fabrizio Romano has said that Newcastle‘s interest in Scott McTominay is definitely real, saying: “McTominay Is a name on the list of Newcastle, he was on the list in January he’ll be on the list in the summer. He’s a player appreciated by the board, by Eddie Howe so McTominay is highly rated at Newcastle but it’s going to be up to Erik ten Hag.”
The only thing more consistent than the links are the fans’ reactions to them. McTominay is arguably no better than what we already have at our disposal already according to large sections of the fanbase. But, while he may not be the most eye-catching of players, there’s no doubting his ability to get the job done.
McTominay now has four goals in two games for Scotland
It also seems like he’s found his goal scoring touch lately having netted four goals in his last two outings for the Scotland national team in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. He helped himself to two goals last night as Scotland beat Spain 2-0. McTominay’s second was a thunderous strike into the bottom corner after some superb play by Newcastle-linked Kieran Tierney.
Whether those goals have done enough to soften the Toon Army’s stance on the young Scot is unclear with some fans suggesting last night’s feat came as a result of Spain fielding a weak team which diminishes McTominay’s achievement. I’m not sure I buy into that theory.

As a fanbase, are hoping for big-name, exciting signings, but the reality is, we still need a couple of grafters in the squad. The type of player who just goes about their business without drawing attention to themselves. Unremarkable in their approach, but extremely efficient.
Howe could get the best out of McTominay
I do believe McTominay can fill that role for us. Eddie Howe clearly sees something in him, and at 26-years-old he should be about to hit his prime, but will still be malleable enough for Howe to work his magic on him like he has with Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.
I say, as long as Manchester United don’t try to take our eyes out, he could be a good addition to our squad next season, his experience of playing in Europe could be especially valuable.
