Fabrizio Romano has heard update about Nicolo Barella to Newcastle now

Newcastle United fans were blown away last night when the news broke that the Magpies were in talks for Italian star Nicolo Barella.

It was a link that seemingly came out of nowhere, and not just one of those “Newcastle are interested in…” type stories, The Telegraph were claiming that the Magpies were actually in talks for Champions League finalist Nicolo Barella for £50million.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the interest on his YouTube channel too, however he wasn’t as confident on the deal as The Telegraph seemed to be saying: “Big stories coming from England. What I can tell you is for sure Newcastle is interested in Barella and Eddie Howe is a big fan of Nicolo Barella. They would love to sign him. But they know that for Inter £50 million is not enough to sell Barella, they extended his contract a few months ago.”

Romano continued: “The idea of Inter is to keep Barella, no chance to sell for £50million, they want way more than this so let’s see if Newcastle will try to increase their proposal or do something serious in the next few days.

“The player is really happy at Inter, he could be one of the future captains and he’s very happy at the club so let’s see if Newcastle would be able to tempt Barella, because the player’s side is also a topic of this story and it’s not easy.”

So if Romano is right, Newcastle still have some work to do to get this one over the line.

I thought £50million seemed low for someone like Barella too, but given Inter Milan‘s financial issues it’s not an unrealistic figure. The big issue will be trying to convince lifelong Inter fan Barella to leave his beloved club to move to Newcastle.

What we as fans can take away from this is that the news seemingly broke when the potential deal was already in motion, which suggests that it could go through.

PIF have moved in the shadows in the transfer market so far as Newcastle’s owners with moves that often catch the media off guard so it seems that this was going to be one of those deals, but the story somehow leaked.

Even if Newcastle have to pay more to secure this deal, just get it done. Barella would elevate Newcastle to the next level. Imagine him and Bruno Guimaraes together next season. So exciting!
