Brahim Diaz is having a stellar season for AC Milan on loan from Real Madrid and as such has popped up on the radar of Newcastle United.
His performances this season have also caused former England manager Fabio Capello to backtrack on comments he made about the 23-year-old with a tweet from Fabrizio Romano quoting Capello as saying: “I was wrong about Brahim Diaz… I did not like him as a player, I thought he was not at Milan level. But he has now completely changed, improved. Now he makes the difference”.
As Romano says in his tweet, Real Madrid now look set to offer the versatile midfielder a long-term deal, but AC Milan are also wanting to keep him in Italy.
Newcastle are keeping track of Brahim Diaz with his situation still up in the air
It was only a few weeks ago that Newcastle were also said to be tracking Diaz. Diaz was formerly on the books at Manchester City after joining their academy from Malaga. But despite Pep Guardiola hailing him as ‘incredible’, Diaz wasn’t able to break into the City setup and was snapped up by Real Madrid.
Diaz has won trophies everywhere he’s gone, he’d be a great signing
Madrid in turn loaned him out to AC Milan and he was part of last season’s title winning side. This season he’s continuing to impress having racked up five goals and three assists in 25 Serie A appearances. Diaz has been a part of teams which have won the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga as well as several other trophies. That kind of experience is invaluable at any age, but at 23 it’s almost unheard of.
It was originally thought that Real would be open to selling Diaz in the summer, but now it looks like his efforts in Italy have changed their stance.
Of course everyone has a price in football, so Madrid could still be tempted to sell if the right offer comes along so Newcastle aren’t entirely out of the race yet, but a move is looking much less likely than it was three weeks ago when their interest came to light.
