Newcastle United have recently been credited with an interest in PSV Eindhoven forward Johan Bakayoko and now Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the Belgian’s future.

A couple of days ago Alan Nixon said that Newcastle had a genuine interest in PSV’s ‘explosive‘ forward Johan Bakayoko who is believed to be worth around £30million.

Now Fabrizio Romano has said that it looks very likely that Bakayoko will be on the move before the window closes after posting on X: “Understand there’s concrete chance to see Johan Bakayoko leaving PSV in the final days of the window with clubs now pushing”

Fabrizio Romano didn’t name any clubs but Newcastle are keen

While Romano doesn’t name any clubs outright it is still possible that Newcastle could be one of those who are pushing for the 20-year-old.

Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy both had their best seasons for Newcastle last year but if we’re being brutally honest, neither are really Champions League level. They both still have a part to play for the club, but there’s definitely a feeling that a right-winger wouldn’t go amiss.

Johan Bakayoko was a goal machine for PSV Under 21’s two seasons ago earning himself a call up to the senior side where he went on to score nine goals and provide six assists last season.

Would Bakayoko improve the squad immediately?

He could still be classed as being a bit raw and maybe not quite first-team ready, which could put Newcastle off, especially at £30million. However, the Magpies are trying to assemble a squad for the future and he definitely fits that bill.

One thing to note from his report on Football Talent Scout is that under weaknesses it mentions how he is over-ambitious when it comes to dribbling and needs to work on his decision making, which is really the exact reason Newcastle need a new winger as we have that issue already.

He sounds more like an Allan Saint-Maximin than a Miguel Almiron, but there’s clearly some work to be done and at £30million it might just be too big of a risk for Eddie Howe right now with a new defender likely a bigger priority.
