Southampton defender Tino Livramento has been left out of the squad for his side’s opening Championship game against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow evening.
Newcastle United have had bids rejected for the 20-year-old, but remain keen on securing his signature, with Southampton wanting around £40m for the Englishman.
A report from The Northern Echo has claimed that Livramento is a mystery absentee in the squad, with exit-linked Southampton stars James Ward Prowse and Romeo Lavia set to feature.
With Russell Martin also confirming that there were no new injuries ahead of the tie, it perhaps indicates that there may have been a breakthrough in negotiations for Livramento, and a move may be edging closer. Of course, it remains to be seen whether anything concrete comes out of his omission, beyond perhaps a minor injury or a tactical decision because of the exit links.
Should Newcastle move for Livramento?
£40m seems an excessive fee for a player who would not initially be a starter, with Kieran Trippier currently occupying the right-back role, but with Livramento the future is being considered.
The Englishman would initially come in as Trippier’s backup, before eventually overtaking the veteran as the first-choice option.

Livramento has been described as “excellent” by England manager Gareth Southgate, and if he can reach his full potential, he could become a key player for club and country.
However, the defender has only just recovered from a long-term ligament injury, and it is still not guaranteed that he can return to his top performance level.
Given the finances involved in the deal, it may be worth considering alternate options if the club cannot negotiate a lower price for Livramento, but if he does arrive, there is every chance that he can flourish under Eddie Howe and become a mainstay in the Newcastle team for years to come.
