There appears to be a chance that Newcastle United could beat Real Madrid to a signing in the form of Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
Clearly, Newcastle United have a lot of work to do in the transfer market this summer. They desperately need to rebuild after a poor season, and key players will need to be replaced.

Even before the summer window, it is also obvious that Newcastle need a new goalkeeper. Nick Pope struggled pretty much all season, while Aaron Ramsdale is not expected to be signed on a permanent basis.
Jaouen is a French U21 international playing in Ligue 2 and while Real Madrid are reportedly keen, he’s seemingly open to a move to Tyneside.

Indeed, The Chronicle claim that the 20-year-old has already thought of the prospect of moving to Newcastle, and has been left impressed by the scale of the club’s fanbase.
They also suggest that Real Madrid have been in contact with his representatives.
Interestingly, the report stresses that the Frenchman would not necessarily demand to be first choice if he were to join Newcastle.

Rather, it seems Jaouen and his agents are taking a view that long-term development is important.
That certainly makes sense from a young player’s perspective. Yet, it doesn’t really help Newcastle United to any great degree.

They need a goalkeeper to come in right away. Pope may have his uses, but starting another season with him as the No.1 would remind everyone of his limitations too.
Signings like Jaouen are the ones the club should be making. Newcastle are hoping to sign younger players this summer, so he’d certainly fit the bill on that front.
However, they need fresh faces ready to hit the ground running, someone who can develop over the coming years all while being ready to play right away.
