Callum Wilson may be allowed to leave Newcastle United this summer according to reports.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson notched his 17th goal of the season yesterday, the first Newcastle player to do so in the Premier League since Alan Shearer in 2003/04, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour that the £20million man could still leave the Magpies this summer.
A few weeks ago there were murmours that Wilson was unsettled and Newcastle after Alexander Isak usurped him as first-choice striker. Wilson was suffering an horrendous goal drought at the time and Isak had found his shooting boots, so it was a no-brainer by Eddie Howe.
Wilson grafted to get back to the form he’s in now
However, Wilson used it to fuel him and has said it was the kick up the backside he needed. After the mid-season break where the team went to Dubai for warm-weather training, Wilson came back refreshed and set of on his brilliant run of goal-scoring form that is still continuing now.
Despite that however, Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport he’s heard ‘whispers’ that Wilson could leave, saying: “There have been a few whispers about Callum Wilson potentially being available this summer, and it is interesting to think about whether they would genuinely consider it.

“For Wilson as a player, I don’t think it would be a great decision to move on from him just yet. He has great self-belief. He has a good goalscoring record in this division, and I get the feeling he is very determined not to be one of the players discarded as this project ramps up at Newcastle.
“But we should also consider it from a business point of view because that’s when I can understand why it might happen. He’s got another year on his deal. He’s 31 and up there with the highest earners at the club. If they were to extend his stay, they would have to continue to pay him very well, and maybe that’s what makes them consider what to do here.”
Eddie Howe won’t turn his back on Wilson after his heroics this season
While I can see where Jones is coming from with regards to his wages and age, I don’t see Wilson moving this summer. He’s given too much to the club, given too much of himself this season for that not to be rewarded with a chance to play in Europe next year.
I know there’s no room for sentimentality in football but given what Wilson has done this season, how he fought back when he looked lost and is now opening up a gap as our top scorer, it’s not about sentiment, it’s about decency.
If Wilson was still struggling to score or was looking off the pace, then yes, I’d be saying it’s time to cash in while we can, but for me he stays, no questions asked. I’m sure Eddie Howe will see it that way too.
