Chelsea look like they’re about to add to their million-man midfield by beating Newcastle United and Arsenal to the signing of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

Brighton knew they were going to have a fight on their hands to keep 21-year-old Ecuadorian sensation Moises Caicedo this summer and all signs were pointing towards a summer move to Arsenal.

Despite the deal with Arsenal looking all wrapped up, Newcastle popped up with an interest in the defensive midfielder who squared up to Joelinton when the sides met at St James’ Park towards the end of last season.

Newcastle stepped away from a deal for Caicedo when Brighton named their price

The Magpies seemed to take a step back when Brighton announced that they’d want at least £70million for him, but Arsenal stayed locked in. However, according to Football Transfers, Chelsea may be prepared to swoop in ahead of their London rivals and offer Caicedo more money to become a Blue.

Caicedo’s agent is nudging him towards the move to Chelsea, as he would as there’s more money for him in the deal. So it now remains to be seen if Arsenal will up their offer to match their London rivals.

As good as Caicedo is, Newcastle must feel they have better, or at least more suitable players for that position lined up as they appear to have walked away from a Caicedo deal all together.

Newcastle need a CDM but will now look elsewhere

Newcastle definitely want a central defensive midfielder, and Caicedo’s stats last season certainly suggest he’d be a brilliant signing, but at £70million, it’s little surprise that the Magpies backed away from a move.

Had the timing been different then maybe we’d have entered the race, but with Newcastle needing several players in this summer and the budget being relatively small (if reports are to be believed), spending such a huge chunk of money on one player is not the best way to go.

It’s a shame as he’d be an amazing signing, but I’m sure Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth will find someone to fill the void and make us forget we were ever linked with him.
