A report in the Chronicle claims Newcastle have been offered Southampton striker Charlie Austin, after it has been made clear to the player he has no future at St Mary’s.
After allegedly launching a rant in the dressing room last week, the player was omitted from the Saints’ pre-season tour of Austria and Ireland, with the consensus being that his time on the south coast is up.
The player has been linked with a move to Newcastle for years, but for one reason or another, no deal was ever done.
With time running out in the transfer window, the club may have to look outside their strict transfer parameters to get enough bodies through the door in time.
An experienced striker at Newcastle would help Joelinton adapt to Premier League
With Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll also linked in recent days, it may mean an older, experienced striker may be drafted in as back-up for newly signed Joelinton.
But that would not be a bad thing, with the record signing’s lack of Premier League experience, someone like a Charlie Austin or Danny Welbeck could well help him make the transition.
While Austin could be available for a relatively nominal fee, it may be a gamble worth taking for Newcastle.
