Celtic are reportedly in negotiations over a move for defender Carl Starfelt, in a development that could be signifcant for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with Hoops centre-half Kris Ajer in recent weeks.

The Norway international is supposedly still an option for Steve Bruce (via Glasgow Live).

The Sunday Mirror claimed back in May (30/05, page 76) that Newcastle were set to sign Ajer for around £6 million.

There has been nothing doing up to now though. But one wonders if there could now be some movement.

Fabrizio Romano says Celtic are in contact with Rubin Kazan about a move for Swedish defender Starfelt.

He adds that an opening bid is set to be made.

Newcastle have also been linked with the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Nat Phillips and Mouctar Diakhaby.

Unsurprisingly, there has not yet been any movement from the club with regards to transfers, with the takeover saga rumbling on in the background.

Celtic preparing to replace Ajer?

Romano suggests in his tweet that Starfelt could well be a replacement for Ajer, who only has one year left on his contract.

It is a situation that Newcastle need to keep an eye on if Ajer is still of interest.

The Daily Record describe Ajer as ‘almost certain’ to leave Parkhead this summer.

The Magpies absolutely need a new central defender who is a bit younger than the current pool of options. Ajer would be a decent addition.
