Man City’s new transfer plan is bad news for Newcastle United as fresh Bruno Guimaraes release clause emerges

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is reportedly attracting fresh interest from Manchester City.

Guimaraes is the beating heart of the Newcastle United team and became the first club captain to lift a major trophy with the Magpies in 55 years when Eddie Howe’s side won the Carabao Cup last month.

The Brazilian has been one of the blocks upon which Howe has built his success at St James’ Park, playing in almost every available minute since his arrival back in January 2022.

Newcastle paid around £40million to sign Guimaraes from Lyon and that has proven to be a bargain.

The midfielder has been an absolute revelation on Tyneside, so it’s perhaps only natural he would attract admiring glances from elsewhere too.

Man City have long been linked with Guimaraes and fresh reports have now emerged.

Man City eye Bruno Guimaraes as Kevin De Bruyne replacement

According to Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte, the fallen Premier League champions are interested in a move for the 27-year-old.

Indeed, they are said to view Guimaraes as a potential replacement for the iconic Kevin De Bruyne, who this month confirmed he will be leaving the Etihad Stadium after a trophy-laden ten-year spell.

The report also adds that the midfielder has a release clause worth £100milion in his contract at Newcastle, which City currently consider to be too expensive.

All of this comes after The Athletic confirmed City are now considering a move for a midfielder following the news of De Bruyne’s departure and that they will ramp up their search following Hugo Viana – who is of course a former Newcastle player – starting as their sporting director.

Is Bruno Guimaraes leaving Newcastle United?

Hopefully not, of course.

David Ornstein has suggested Guimaraes is staying at Newcastle, albeit that was when the midfielder was being linked with Arsenal.

Guimaraes had a release clause of £100million last summer but no one activated it. Quite why they would now that he’s almost a year older is up for debate, if the report suggesting there’s still one active in his contract is to be believed.

Pep Guardiola believes Guimaraes is an “exceptional holding midfielder”, which may be slightly revealing.

De Bruyne, of course, plays further forward. Guimaraes is obviously capable of that too and has been doing so recently but Guardiola’s comments would suggest he views him in a deeper role, at least during the time in which he was speaking.
