Should Newcastle United want to take advantage of the January transfer window to pick up some of the ones that got away, then one player who Newcastle have been interested in for a while could still be available.
All summer long the links between Newcastle and Manchester United‘s Scott McTominay would not go away, but despite all the interest, McTominay remains at Old Trafford.
A report in the Evening Standard covering Fulham‘s failed deal with Bayern Munich for Joao Palhinha makes mention of a deadline day move by Marco Silva to bring McTominay in from Manchester United to replace him.

That deal also failed to materialise which left McTominay at Manchester United as one of the players with an uncertain future as Erik ten Hag overhauls the side.
With that in mind then, it seems that McTominay will once again be on the market come January which could still be of interest to Newcastle.

As well as a centre-back, Newcastle lack a true holding midfielder, and although McTominay has started drifting forward more lately, resulting in a glut of goals for club and country last season, he is also adept at playing that number six role.
Newcastle need a number six but is McTominay the right fit?
Former Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a big fan of McTominay calling him ‘brilliant‘ during his spell managing the club.

Manchester United value him at around £40million which could put Newcastle off making a move, but if the option is still there they could be tempted.
Personally, as much as I think Newcastle need to fill that number six role, I’m unconvinced by McTominay. He’s a Premier League-standard player, but I’m not sure he’s a top-eight standard player.
