‘Brilliant’ 26-year-old who Newcastle wanted in January will now be available for £17m in the summer

Newcastle United had been tracking the progress of a number of players in the January window and one of their targets may now be made available in the summer.

A key injury to Nick Pope has forced Martin Dubravka to step up in recent games, though the future of the Slovakian is uncertain as Newcastle face having a goalkeeping crisis this summer.

The Magpies had registered interest in Monza keeper Michele Di Gregorio in January though nothing ever came of it, but now a report from Tuttosport is claiming he will be available for £17m in the summer.

Di Gregorio has been impressing at Monza in Serie A where he has played 21 times and kept 10 clean sheets to help the Italian side maintain a midtable spot that they secured last season.

Thanks to his ‘brilliant‘ performances over in Europe, the 26-year-old has attracted interest from some top teams who are looking to give Di Gregorio a chance to prove himself at the very top of football.

Newcastle were one of those teams who showed interest in the shot-stopper but they are certainly not alone as AC Milan also look to add to their goalkeeping department.

Monza were never going to allow Di Gregorio leave in January despite the interest but would consider a move in the summer if the price was right, and that price is now believed to be around £17m.

Newcastle could have goalkeeping crisis

Pope is expected to return in the middle of March which will be music to the ears of Newcastle supporters, but there may be some issues in the goalkeeping department in the summer.

Both Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie will be out of contract while 35-year-old backup Dubravka may be looking for more regular minutes elsewhere as Pope looks to take back his starting spot.

Should Dubravka be sold it would leave Newcastle with just one keeper and in desperate need of new additions, which is why DI Gregorio could certainly be an option they are looking at.

That said, it seems unrealistic that they would spend so much on a player who may or may not start regularly in the Premier League, so unless they are planning to sell Pope this move makes little sense for both parties.
