Newcastle United are looking to sign a centre-back this summer, and appear to be back on the trail of Roger Ibanez.
Ibanez was a target for Newcastle at the start of the season, but the Magpies decided to sign Sven Botman instead.
The Dutchman has been sensational ever since his £35million move to St James’ Park, and now Newcastle appear to be searching for his long-term partner. And they might have found him playing for Roma.
Newcastle interested in Roger Ibanez
According to Italian outlet Giallorossi.net, Newcastle are one of three clubs that are interested in signing Ibanez this summer. The report claims that Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid are also keen on bringing in the 24-year-old defender.
Scouts from all three clubs were reportedly in Rome to watch Ibanez play against Inter Milan. They were there to witness a mistake from the Brazilian, as he sloppily gave away possession to allow Romelu Lukaku to score Inter’s second in a 2-0 win.

Whether or not that mistake influences Newcastle’s thinking, Ibanez is a player who they could potentially sign for around £26million according to Giallorossi.net.
That is an affordable fee, and a lot less than his valuation during the summer transfer window of 2022.
Roma wanted £70million last year
As previously mentioned, Newcastle were also linked with signing Ibanez last summer. However, they were put off by the price tag.

That is because Roma wanted his release clause paid in full, meaning he would have cost the Magpies £70million. Unsurprisingly, Newcastle walked away.
Fast forward 12 months and his asking price has been slashed, with Ibanez seemingly available for £44million less than he was last year.
Given his price tag, Ibanez could be a very tempting option for Newcastle, who are looking to make elite signings ahead of potentially playing in the Champions League. It will be up to the Toon recruitment team to decide whether or not Ibanez falls into that category.
