‘Best chance’… European club are now leading the race for 13-goal striker who Newcastle want

Newcastle United are keen on bringing in a young striker in the summer, but there’s stiff competition for some of their targets.

Back in January Newcastle had shown interest in Nurnberg striker Can Uzun who has been impressing in the German second division, though any move would have to be made in the summer.

Sky Sports journalist Kerry Hau has now claimed that it is Eintracht Frankfurt who are leading the race for Uzun despite Newcastle’s interest in the 18-year-old.

Newcastle keen on signing a new striker this summer

The future of Callum Wilson is currently up in the air with the 31-year-old having less than 18 months left on his current contract and close to reaching the twilight of his career.

Should they choose to sell him, that would leave Newcastle with just one recognised striker in Alexander Isak, another whose fitness is often unreliable and has struggled with injuries during his time on Tyneside.

The club are very keen to bolster their attack in the summer with Uzun listed as one of their top targets at the minute, though that could very well change as we learn more about how much they’ll have to spend.

Ideally for Newcastle they would be looking at someone who isn’t demanding first-team football but who is quality enough to step in for Isak when unavailable or for rotation, and that could very well be perfect for Uzun.

Uzun set for big summer move

It looks like ever Nurnberg have resigned themselves to the fact that Uzun will be leaving the German club in the summer with their director suggesting there is little they can do to stop him.

Having impressed with his 13 goals this season and three assists to go along with that haul, Uzun is destined to make the leap to a bigger team this summer.

Frankfurt makes the most sense as the young man would be able to stay in Germany where he is obviously already comfortable and would be given the chance toplay European football.

But that doesn’t mean Newcastle are out of the race for the Turkish striker who could still make the leap over to the Premier League in six months time.
