Newcastle United will not have it easy when it comes to signing players this summer.

While there is hope Newcastle United will finally be able to splash some cash at the end of the season, merely having the funds available is only part of the battle.

Indeed, there’s still the small matter of convincing big-name targets to join the club. Newcastle are confident they have money to spend this summer but the pool of players they can turn to who realistically improve their first-team straight away is reasonably small.

Indeed, Newcastle want to sign three players this summer, so it appears to be a summer in which they’ll look for quality over quantity. Newcastle are planning to sign a defender, although one player who has recently been offered to them looks set to be going elsewhere.

Jonathan Tah transfer update after Newcastle United offer

Jonathan Tah looks to be in demand this summer.

The German international will be leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season on a free transfer. As such, the 29-year-old looks likely to receive a number of offers.

Newcastle have been offered Tah by agents but Bayern Munich look to have taken the lead.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the German champions have held concrete talks with the player over the prospect of a move. He’s believed to be their number one defensive target.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also said to be in the race.

Newcastle United’s top defensive target this summer

Landing Tah on a free would be a brilliant bit of business, although that would depend on the wages. A German international to have played at the highest level, he looks a very attractive signing.

Still, such is the level of interest in the player, actually getting to that stage would be difficult. Battling European giants for a signing cannot be easy.

Luckily, it seems the club have other plans when it comes to a defensive signing.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is believed to be Newcastle’s leading transfer target this summer, having failed to land him last year.
