Barcelona reportedly looking at Newcastle defender Fabian Schar

Newcastle defender Fabian Schar has reportedly emerged as a surprise target for Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Athletic have claimed Ronald Koeman is looking to bolster his defensive options and has placed Schar on his list, along with Antonio Rudiger of Chelsea.

In the weeks leading up to the January transfer window, there has been a lot of talk about Barca potentially signing Eric Garcia, who is out of contract at Manchester City next summer.

But it appears Schar could also head for the Nou Camp, with it being explained that the 29-year-old could be a good short-term stop-gap until the summer.

Schar’s form at Newcastle has waned in recent times.

He’s missed the past few games for reasons that haven’t been disclosed by Steve Bruce or the club, and has made just seven appearances in 2020/21.

He enjoyed a fantastic first season at St. James’ Park, but has struggled a fair bit with injuries.

Newcastle should retain Schar

He may not be at the peak of his powers right now, but Newcastle should probably not be looking to offload the Swiss star in January.

It’s a hectic season, and £40,000-a-week star Schar (Spotrac) is going to be needed for rotation at some point.

Barcelona may be in a tricky situation finanically, but the Magpies should not be looking to do them any favours.
