Barcelona have reportedly got Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes in their sights as they look to return to their former glory.

A report in The Times has suggested that Barcelona may now look to test Newcastle‘s resolve with an £87million bid for Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

The Brazilian is reportedly in talks with Newcastle over a new contract and has often reiterated his desire to remain at Newcastle. In his end of season chat with NUFC TV, he outlined his commitment to the club saying he will be staying for as long as his contract will allow and potentially beyond.

Newcastle have already started looking for replacements for Bruno Guimaraes

That obviously won’t stop other clubs looking on and it certainly won’t stop the media from writing stories about a possible exit.

The Times article even suggests that the Magpies have already started looking for replacements. The thinking being that such a huge offer would be difficult to turn down as it would add extra funds for the squad rebuild.

On the flip side of that logic, I’d say, what’s the point in trying to build a competitive squad if you’re going to sell the very man you’re building that squad around?

Barcelona might be tempting but Newcastle won’t be in a rush to sell

I always take stories linking Bruno with a move away with a huge pinch of salt. He came here fully aware of what the project was, it was that project that sold him on the move and for me, I don’t see him moving until he has seen it through.

I’m also not sure that Newcastle really need to sell. I understand that making such a huge profit on one of our players will grease the Financial Fair Play wheels a bit, but the club is doing huge things towards that goal anyway, without needing to sell their top players.

So let’s not panic. We aren’t that club any more, we don’t need to sell and we won’t sell if we don’t want to. Bruno Guimaraes will still be at Newcastle next season.
