Atletico Madrid are becoming something of an obstacle in Newcastle United’s pursuit of one of their midfield targets this summer.

The Spanish club are now showing interest in rivalling Newcastle for one of the most impressive midfielders in Europe who has really shone in an underwhelming side.

A report from Marca claims that Atletico don’t want to make the same mistake as when they missed out on Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes five years ago.

Newcastle face tough competition for ‘brilliant’ midfielder

Newcastle have been interested in Atalanta midfielder Ederson since last year when teams first started to notice his great start to the season, and interest is yet to die down ahead of the summer window.

The 24-year-old has netted five times in Serie A this season though typically plays in a more deeper role which may suit Newcastle who are on the lookout for another option in that area.

However, it’s never straightforward in these types of deals, especially with a club like Atletico Madrid in the picture who will be able to offer the Atalanta star Champions League football next year.

The La Liga club actually had the chance to sign Bruno five years ago but missed out, and now it looks like they don’t want to make the same mistake by losing out to Newcastle yet again.

Newcastle need big name players

After a summer which saw them bring in some exciting young talent in Tino Livrameto and Lewis Hall, what Newcastle’s priority simply has to be this summer is improving the first-team.

Of course, they will have Sandro Tonali returning to the side who missed practically the whole season with a gambling ban, and it will be like having a completely new signing when he comes back.

While it’s unclear exactly how much they will have to spend, Newcastle can’t afford to be investing in the future for much longer, as this season has proven they lack a lot of experience in the team.

The difficult task will be attracting those types of players without European football should they miss out, and without breaking their wage structure which they have so far managed to stick to.
